Among today’s Italian violists, Alfredo Zamarra is undoubtedly one of the most highly regarded and in demand. After graduating with distinction from the Conservatory of Piacenza under the guidance of Claudio Pavolini, he further broadened and deepened his instrumental training by following the advice and teachings of Salvatore Accardo, Alexander Lonquich, Fedor Druzinin, Piero Farulli, and Bruno Giuranna, who considers him one of the most inspired musicians of his generation, endowed with excellent instrumental technique and a remarkably clear musical sensitivity.
For over twenty years, he served as principal viola of the Orchestra of Teatro La Fenice in Venice, where he frequently performed as a soloist, including under the direction of Jeffrey Tate in Strauss’s Don Quixote, receiving outstanding reviews.
He regularly collaborates as principal viola with the Orchestra and the Philharmonic of Teatro alla Scala in Milan.
Among the many orchestras that have featured Alfredo as a soloist are the South Czech Philharmonic, the Orchestra of Teatro La Fenice in Venice, the Arena di Verona Orchestra, the Teatro Regio di Parma Orchestra, the Chamber Orchestra of Padua and Veneto, and the Orchestra dei Pomeriggi Musicali.
Very active also in the field of chamber music, he has collaborated with leading Italian ensembles and instrumentalists, including Salvatore Accardo, Mario Brunello, Bruno Canino, Francesca Dego, Rocco Filippini, Benedetto Lupo, Piernarciso Masi, the Quartetto di Cremona, Beatrice Rana, Giovanni Sollima, Sonig Tchakerian, and Uto Ughi. He is frequently invited to chamber music festivals in Italy, Germany, England, and the United States, performing with artists such as the Schumann Quartett, Altenberg Trio, Cyprien Katsaris, Shlomo Mintz, Marc Bouchkov, Alena Baeva, Ani Kavafian, Jan Talich, Carter Brey, Cynthia Phelps, Boris Garlitsky, and Ilya Grubert.
Winner of the Ministry competition based on qualifications and examinations, since 2024 he has been Professor of Viola at the “F.A. Bonporti” Conservatory in Trento.
